ลักษณะภูมิประเทศของเทศบาลแม่เหียะเป็นพื้นที่ราบ

เทศบาลแม่เหียะ มีการตั้งรากฐานของชุมชนบริเวณเชิงเขาพระธาตุดอยคำ ประชาชนตั้งบ้านเรือนเรียงรายอยู่บริเวณลำห้วยขนาดใหญ่ และลำห้วยแห่งนี้มีต้นไผ่ชนิดหนึ่งอยู่ริมฝั่งน้ำคาวล้านนาโบราณ เรียกว่า “ไม้เฮียะ”  ดังนั้นลำห้วยนี้จึงถูกเรียกว่า “ลำห้วยแม่เฮียะ” และสัญนิฐานว่าลำน้ำนี้ได้ถูกนำมาตั้งเป็นชื่อของตำบลแม่เหียะ  ซึ่งเป็นคำที่เพี้ยนมาจาก “แม่เฮียะ” จึงเป็นชื่อตำบลมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน และในพื้นที่เทศบาลเมืองแม่เหียะยังมีพิธีกรรมที่สำคัญและเก่าแก่ที่สืบต่อกันมานาคือ พิธีเลี้ยงดง คือประเพณีเลี้ยงผีเมืองเชียงใหม่ ปู่แสะย่าแสะ ถือเป็นหนึ่งในอารักษ์ ผีเมือง และพิธีเลี้ยงดงมีความสัมพันธ์เกี่ยวโยงกับชาวลัวะ กลุ่มชนเก่าแก่ของอุษาคเนย์ พิธีเลี้ยงดงจะจัดขึ้นก่อนฤดูกาลทำนาของทุกปี โดยในพิธีจะมีการนำควายมาฆ่าเพื่อเป็นเครื่องเซ่นไหว้วิญญาณ

ซึ่งพิธีเลี้ยงดงนี้ชาวบ้านยังทำการเลี้ยงผีจนถึงปัจจุบัน

      วัดพระธาตุดอยคำ เป็นวัดที่สำคัญในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ อายุเก่าแก่กว่า 1300ปี สร้างในปี พ.ศ. 1230 รัชสมัยพระนางจามเทวีกษัตริย์ แห่งหริภุญชัย โดยโอรสทั้งสองเป็นผู้สร้างประกอบด้วย เจดีย์บรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุของพระพุทธเจ้า ศาลาการเปรียญกุฎิสงฆ์ และพระพุทธรูปปูนปั้น วัดพระธาตุดอยคำเดิมชื่อวัดสุวรรณบรรพต แต่ชาวบ้านเรียก “วัดดอยคำ” ปัจจุบันผู้คนหลั่งไหลมาจากทั่วทุกสารทิศมาที่วัดพระธาตุดอยคำ เพื่อกราบไหว้ขอพรพระเจ้าทันใจ

Mueang Mae Hia Municipality

The topography of Mueang Mae Hia Municipality is a flat area.

Mueang Mae Hia Municipality with the foundation of the community was established at the foothill of “Phra That Doi Kham.” People built their houses lined up around a large creek. In the area of the creek, there was a kind of bamboo on the ancient Lanna Nam Khao coast called “Lam Huai Mae Hia.” Additionally, it was assumed that the name of Mae Hia Sub-district derived from the name of the creek slightly distorted from the word “Mae Hia.” Therefore, the name of the district has been used until nowadays.

In the areas of Mueang Mae Hia Municipality, there has been the important and oldest rite  for a long time locally called “Liang Dong” (ritual of spirit worship of Chiang Mai) the grandfather Sae and the grandmother Sae. The rite is one of the urban spirit reservations. Moreover, “Liang Dong” ritual is related to Lua people who came from an original ethnic tribe in Southeast Asia. This rite (Liang Dong) will be held before the farming season every year. In the ceremony, buffalos will be killed to offer to the spirits. This ceremony has been carried on by farmers since then.

Phra That Doi Kham Temple (Wat Phra That Doi Kham) is an important temple in Chiang Mai province. The temple aged more than 1,300 years old was built in B.E. 1230 in the reign of Queen Chammadevi of Hariphunchai. Her sons built Chedi containing the Buddha’s relics, the hall of worship, and a stucco Buddha image. Phra That Doi Kham Temple (Wat Phra That Doi Kham) was originally called Suwan Banphot Temple (Wat Suwan Banphot), but the villagers call it “Wat Doi Kham”. Nowadays, people flowing from all over to Wat Phra That Doi Kham to pay homage to Phra Chao Than Chai.
